AMA - American Medical Association

Become a Member of the American Medical Association, the oldest and largest association within organized medicine

Internships & Leadership Positions


  • GRIP (Government Relations Internship Program) - 6-8 week summer internship in Washington, DC at either the AMA or one of the Medical Speciality Societies for medical students interested in healthcare policy
  • Discovery Channel Elective - Spend 4-weeks developing a medical education program that will air on the Discovery Channel. A $3,000 stipend is provided.

Conferences & Networking


  • Interim Meeting (Nov. 8-10, 2012 in Honolulu, HI) - The interim meeting includes great networking opportunities, as well as elections for various national leadership positions
  • Lobby Day (Feb. 9-11, 2013 in Washington, DC) - Join with 200 medical students to learn about current legislative issues and meet with congressional offices to discuss these issues
  • Annual Meeting (June 13-15, 2013 in Chicago, IL) - Held alongside the AMA’s House of Delegates, be a part of healthcare policy making at the AMA’s annual conference
  • Regional Meetings - Take place around the nation throughout the year and can be a great way to network and start to get involved

  • Governing Council - The Governing Council leads the AMA-MSS, and is a great opportunity to gain experience as a national leader, apply here
  • Standing Committees - Apply for membership on any one of the 10 standing committees, such as the Committee of Legislation & Advocacy (COLA) and the Committee on Economics and Quality in Medicine (CEQM)
  • Convention Committees - Network and serve on the board that makes the AMA-MSS meetings possible
  • Regional Delegates - Serve as a Medical Student Regional Delegate at the AMA’s House of Delegates, and get to vote on important policy and ethical issues, apply here

  • Campaign School - 4-day workshop in Arlington, VA that will train you to become a top political strategist and potentially work for a political campaign (medical students are invited to apply)
  • Candidate Workshop - Take the leap from the exam room to the campaign trail over a weekend in Arlington, VA. This is a great experience (medical students are invited to apply)

  • Empowering Future Physicians Conferences (Oct. 12-14, Fort Lauderdale, FL / Oct. 19-21, San Antonio, FL / Oc. 26-28, Chicago, IL)
  • Annual Convention (March 14-17, 2013 in Washington DC) - Featuring 5 programming tracks, including Advocacy, Career Development, International Health, Professionalism, Wellness, and Public Health. Also, AMSA National Leadership Positions will be filled here.
  • Chapter Residency Fairs (Throughout the Year) - Run by local chapters, excellent opportunity for networking within a smaller group
